Camping checklist with kids.
Children add gear, laundry, snacks, and a different definition of “bedtime.” This list starts with two kids and builds a family pack list around the weather and the trip.

Two kids are preselected. Change the counts, add a dog, or choose wet weather to see what changes.

Pack sheet
Pack for the kids, not the photo.
Camping with children is mostly about margin: extra clothes, extra wipes, extra snacks, and a plan for the moment someone is cold, wet, or done with the day. A familiar comfort item earns its space.
Family-trip rules that help
- One bag per child, with a full change of clothes in a dry bag.
- Layers, not one heavy coat; kids run hot and cold.
- Headlamps and a night light make the dark less dramatic.
- Choose a site with a bathroom and a short walk if you have very young children.
- Bring more snacks than you think you need; hangry is a real weather system.
Keep the first trip close to home and short. A good night’s sleep beats a perfect itinerary.
Good questions.
Short answers. Check the campsite rules before you pack the axe.
What should I pack for camping with kids?
Start with the normal tent or car list, then add extra clothes, wipes, snacks, games, a night light, and a familiar comfort item. The builder adds the kid-specific items and increases quantities for the group.
How do I keep kids warm at night?
Use a sleeping bag rated for the conditions, a warm base layer, a hat, and a dry change of clothes. Avoid overdressing before bed; damp clothes make the night colder.
What is the best camping age?
Families camp with babies and teens, but the plan changes. With very young children, choose a site close to the car and a bathroom, and bring more wipes and changes of clothes than you think you need.
Should I bring toys?
A few familiar, weather-tolerant toys are worth the space. Add a night light and a card game; leave the giant toy bin at home.
