Car camping checklist.
You have a vehicle; use it. Car camping trades backpack weight for a better mattress, a cooler, and a few comforts. The list still depends on weather, people, and how long you are staying.
Build the car-camping list
Car camping is preselected. Add kids, dogs, rain, or a swim day and the list changes.
Your pack list
Check items as they go into the car. The list stays in this browser, and the print view fits a clipboard.

Pack sheet
Car camping is not a backpacking trip.
The car lets you bring a real cooler, an air mattress, chairs, and a camp kitchen. It also makes it easy to overpack. The useful rule is not “bring everything”; it is “bring the things that make the trip easier, then stop.”
Pack for the vehicle
- Keep water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and a headlamp within reach, not under the tent.
- Use bins or duffels by category so the car does not become a gear pile.
- Bring a tarp for rain and shade; the vehicle is not a dry room.
- Check the site’s parking, quiet hours, and food-storage rules.
If you are sleeping in the vehicle, confirm it is legal and safe, crack a window for ventilation, and never run the engine in an enclosed space.
Good questions.
Short answers. Check the campsite rules before you pack the axe.
What is car camping?
Car camping means sleeping at or beside your vehicle, often at a drive-in campsite. You can bring more weight than a backpacker, so the list adds an air mattress, pump, cooler, chairs, and a few car-side comforts.
Do I still need a tent for car camping?
Usually, yes, unless you sleep inside a vehicle with a proper setup. The builder includes a tent for car camping; remove it from your packing if you have a verified sleep-in vehicle.
What should stay in the car?
Water, snacks, a first-aid kit, a headlamp, a power bank, and a warm layer are good things to keep within reach. Do not leave food or scented items in a vehicle overnight in bear country.
Can I use this list for a festival?
Yes, but add earplugs, a bandana, cash, and a refillable bottle. Festival camping has different noise, food, and shower rules; the gear core still applies.
