How far does a cubic yard go?

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Coverage depends on how deep you spread it.

1 inch deep

324 sq ft

A light refresh or a small bed.

2 inches deep

162 sq ft

Topdressing a lawn or a shallow bed.

3 inches deep

108 sq ft

The usual mulch depth for weed control.

4 inches deep

81 sq ft

Gravel paths, driveways, and heavy cover.

The formulaArea (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12 = cubic feet. Cubic feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Add 10% for settling.

Bulk or bags?

The math is the same; the packaging is not. Pick the one that saves you a second trip.

01

Small jobs, bags

Under a cubic yard, bags are easier to carry and store. A 2 cu ft bag is 1/13.5 of a yard.

02

Big jobs, bulk

Over a cubic yard, bulk is usually cheaper per yard and fewer trips. Check delivery fees.

03

Order a little extra

Add 10% for settling and uneven ground. Running short on a Sunday is the expensive part.

Short answers. No trip to the yard required.

How many bags are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. With 2 cu ft bags, that is 13.5 bags; with 0.5 cu ft bags, 54 bags. The calculator rounds up to whole bags.

How much does a cubic yard of mulch cover?

About 324 sq ft at 1 inch deep, 162 sq ft at 2 inches, 108 sq ft at 3 inches, and 81 sq ft at 4 inches.

Should I order bulk or bags?

Bags are easier for small jobs under a cubic yard. Bulk is usually cheaper per yard for larger jobs, but check delivery fees and access.

Do I need extra for settling?

Yes. Add about 10% for settling, uneven ground, and edges. The estimate is a starting point, not a guarantee.

How is the cost calculated?

The default prices are rough US averages per cubic yard or per square foot for sod. Change the price field to match your local yard.

Does this work for sod?

Yes. Choose sod and the calculator switches to square feet and 500 sq ft pallets. It does not use depth.
