Three gravel rules.

The stone is the easy part. Depth and base decide whether it stays put.

01

Depth by use

4 inches for driveways, 2 inches for paths, 2–3 inches for decorative cover.

02

Base first

A driveway needs a compacted base layer. The calculator only estimates the visible gravel.

03

Weight, not volume

Gravel is sold by the ton in many yards. The calculator uses about 1.4 tons per cubic yard.

Before you order.

Short answers. No trip to the yard required.

How deep should gravel be?

About 4 inches for a driveway or parking area, 2 inches for a garden path, and 2–3 inches for decorative cover. Deeper layers need a compacted base.

How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?

Roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, depending on the stone. The calculator uses 1.4 as an estimate.

Can I use bags for a driveway?

For small patches, yes. For a full driveway, bulk is usually cheaper; a 0.5 cu ft bag adds up quickly.

Does the calculator include a base layer?

No. It estimates the visible gravel. A driveway base needs separate crushed stone and compaction.

Stop guessing. Order the right amount.
