Your rhythm
The seasonal spine.
Home maintenance follows the weather and the systems. In most climates, spring is water management and cooling; summer is exterior and pool care; fall is heating, gutters, and freeze prep; winter is safety, filters, and pipes. The exact month shifts with where you live.
Monthly tasks that always matter
- Look for leaks, stains, and new cracks.
- Keep filters and drains clear.
- Test smoke and CO alarms; replace batteries when needed.
- Walk the exterior after a storm.
- Write down anything that is deferred; deferred work compounds.
The planner adds the climate- and feature-specific work on top of that spine. It is a maintenance rhythm, not a guarantee.
Good questions.
Short answers. Local codes and licensed trades still decide the details.
What maintenance should I do each month?
The short answer: safety checks and filters every season, water management before and after rain or snow, and a quick look at the systems that cost the most to replace. The planner builds the exact month-by-month list from your home profile.
How often should I change the furnace filter?
Usually every 1–3 months, depending on the filter, pets, dust, and run time. A 1-inch filter often needs more frequent changes than a 4-inch media filter. Follow the furnace or filter manufacturer’s guidance.
When should I clean the gutters?
At least twice a year in most climates, and more often under trees. Clear them before the rainy season and again after the worst of the fall drop.
What should I check before winter?
Furnace service, chimney or fireplace inspection, pipe insulation, outdoor hose shutdown, irrigation winterization, gutters, roof flashing, and weatherstripping. The winter page covers the cold-climate version.
